Tipping is a simple way for customers to show appreciation, and it can be a boost to your income. In Vagaro, tips paid by cash, check, or gift card need to be entered manually during checkout. Credit card payments, on the other hand, automatically prompt the customer to select a tip amount or print a tip receipt, making the process quick. If the checkout includes services from multiple employees, Vagaro will automatically split the tip based on the price of the service each person performed. You can also manually split tips at checkout to reward a specific provider.
Prerequisites: This feature is available for all Vagaro businesses.
Vagaro allows businesses to accept tips through various devices, including phones, tablets, Pay Desk, PayPro, and computers. On touchscreen devices, customers can choose from four preset tip options during checkout or enter a custom amount, including $0.00 if they choose not to tip. These tip options can be customized in your Checkout Settings. When using a computer with a receipt printer, you can print a tip receipt for the customer to manually write in a tip. If you're using a PayPro Mini with a computer, the tip screen appears directly on the PayPro Mini. For setups with only a computer, you’ll need to ask the customer for their desired tip amount, then enter it manually during checkout.
Note
Credit Card Processing is required to accept credit cards with Vagaro.
If you have a touchscreen device, you can hand the device to your customer so they can select a tip. When you charge their credit card at checkout, four tip options will appear for them to choose from. You can customize these tip options in your Checkout Settings.

Is there a way to split the tip differently after the transaction is processed? For instance, if the customer didn't realize that it defaulted to a 50-50 split wants to change it?
Additionally, when a client selects a percentage on the tip screen, I wish the system default would be to leave the tip based on the percentage of the service they provided. We have instances where one service provider performs a $100 service and another provider performs a $20 service. If the client selects a 20% tip, each provider gets $12, meaning one got a 12% tip and one got a 60% tip.
I just wanted to add one more Tip related issue I just noticed after submitting my post. If you add a single service to a Checkout, click the Tip field, and choose 20%, but then add a single product, the tip calculation changes to include the 20% of the product cost. This is not desirable here in the US, as most customers in Salons or Spas do not intend to tip of the receipt total, but rather the service total. Vagaro development may need to add a settings parameter to tell the system if tips should be calculated on services only, or on all line items in the basket, (which could include gift cards), which doesn't seem correct.
Another factor to consider with tip calculations is discounts. Tips should be calculated based on the selling price of a Service, and not on the discounted price. Here in the US, we typically tip on the pre-discounted selling prices and NOT on the net price after discount. True in restaurants and Salons pretty much across the board.
I agree with Emily.
It is not right to automatically split the tip between the service providers, the tip should be split based on the cost of the SERVICE. its ridiculous to ask the receptionist to split the tip each and every time a client checks out, this adds more work and stress to all workers as well as the owner. This needs to be fixed immediately or I am switching to another system.
Hi Lexi,
I brought up your concerns to our Team and they are looking to update this feature in the future. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.
I just had the same go-around for two hours with a customer service rep. Especially with the new COVID check-out feature, the checkout is literally in the clients hands. If a client selects a percentage tip it should be split appropriate based on cost of service, not 50/50 between providers. Also, it can be awkward for both practitioner and client alike to have to make the client calculate and click on SPLIT features when it's something that should be done automatically. Or, at least provide an option to go in post-checkout and edit tip allocation (without having to refund and reprocess, because that's ridiculous and a waste of time). I know other operating systems have these options so I'm just surprised to see that this still isn't available with Vagaro, especially when I'm seeing the same comments/complains from people from 3 years ago.
Hi Danielle: There are a few requests for this feature in the requests list. Take a look and add your vote and comment to any ones that match your issue. Go to https://feedback.vagaro.com, enter "split a tip" in the search field on the right, under the list of feature requests, then click More ideas --> to see a complete list of requests about tip splitting.
Looks like there's multiple pages of people pretty much requesting the same thing, just worded differently, going back years. Surprised it hasn't been implemented yet. Anyone in the service industry will tell you tips should be split from percentage of service price, not 50/50.
The tip split option has been changed, and this article rewritten to show the new methods. You can, as before, just type in a tip amount for each provider. Clicking or tapping in the $ field for each provider offers tipping percentages that are calculated from the service cost by each provider. No more default 50/50 split!
