Cash Drawer Setup on Windows with the Star Printer

The Star printer can be set up to open the Cash Drawer automatically when printing a receipt.

Note

The following steps assume you have already set up the printer. If you have not, please refer to the following link for more details- Star Printer Setup.

Connect Your Printer to Your Cash Drawer

Note

The steps follow the configuration steps on a Windows 11 device.

  1. Turn off your printer.

  2. Connect your cash drawer to your printer with the provided (RJ12) cable.

    1. Carefully flip the drawer upside down and plug the cable into the port located at the bottom of the cash drawer.

      Note

      Some newer devices already have this plug built in. Skip this step if so.

    2. Plug the other end of the cable into the back of the printer, as seen below.

  3. Once connected, turn your printer back on.

  4. In Windows, select Start.

  5. Select Settings, then navigate to the Bluetooth & devices tab on the left side of the window.

  6. Select Printers & Scanners.

  7. Select the Star printer from the device list.

  8. Select Printer properties.

  9. Select the Device Settings tab.

  10. There are seven selections at the bottom. Make sure to choose the following:

    • FRICTION: Letter

    • Cash Drawer1 - Pulse Width: 200 milliseconds

    • Peripheral Unit Type: Cash Drawer

    • Buzzer 1 - On Time: 200 milliseconds

    • Buzzer 1 - Off Time: 500 milliseconds

    • Buzzer 2 - On Time: 200 milliseconds

    • Buzzer 2 - Off Time: 500 milliseconds

  11. Select Apply, then select OK.

    Is there any way to set it up so the cash drawer can open without printing or is it fully reliant on printing something?

    Hi Aden, the cash drawer is fully reliant on printing a receipt to open.

    Hi Paul, 

    You need to purchase the Vagaro Receipt printer to have your drawer open after checking out a customer. If you don't have a receipt printer, then you'll need to manually open the drawer with the provided key.
