The Star printer can be set up to open the Cash Drawer automatically when printing a receipt.
Note
The following steps assume you already have set up the printer. If you have not, please refer to the following link for more details- Star Printer Setup.
Keep in mind the steps below follow the configuration on a Windows 11 device.

Turn off your printer.

Connect your cash drawer to your printer with the provided (RJ12) cable.

Carefully flip the drawer upside down and plug the cable into the port located at the bottom of the cash drawer.

Plug the other end of the cable into the back of the printer, as seen below.

Once connected, turn your printer back on.

In Windows, click Start.

Select Settings, then navigate to the Bluetooth & devices tab on the left side of the window.

Select Printers & Scanners.

Select the Star printer from the device list.

Select Printer properties.

Select the Device Settings tab.

There are seven selections at the bottom. Make sure to choose the following:

FRICTION: Letter

Cash Drawer1 - Pulse Width: 200 milliseconds

Peripheral Unit Type: Cash Drawer

Buzzer 1 - On Time: 200 milliseconds

Buzzer 1 - Off Time: 500 milliseconds

Buzzer 2 - On Time: 200 milliseconds

Buzzer 2 - Off Time: 500 milliseconds

Click Apply, then click OK.

Is there any way to set it up so the cash drawer can open without printing or is it fully reliant on printing something?
Hi Aden, the cash drawer is fully reliant on printing a receipt to open.
